The Gladstone community places a high value on the delivery of high quality health services for our community. To coordinate and maximise the quality of Gladstone’s health services, leaders from the community, health providers, major industry and our three levels of government have come together to form the Gladstone Health Partnership.

Rio Tinto Alan Yarwun

Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun is an alumina refinery that processes bauxite from northern Queensland to make alumina, which is then used to make aluminium.  The refinery recently completed a $2.4 billion expansion and now has the capacity to produce 3.4 million tonnes of alumina per year. Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun permanently employs over 700 people.

Queensland Alumina Limited  (QAL)

QAL is an alumina refinery which processes bauxite from northern Queensland to make alumina which is then used to make aluminium. QAL produces nearly 4 million tonnes of alumina per year and was for many years the largest alumina refinery in the world. QAL was built in the 1960s and permanently employs over 1,000 people.

Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL)

BSL is an aluminium smelter which smelts alumina from QAL to make aluminium. BSL is Australia’s biggest aluminium smelter and produces 550,000 tonnes of aluminium per year. The smelter permanently employs over 1,200 people and is located on the northern end of Boyne Island. BSL was built in the 1980s and recently completed a $750 million upgrade.

Orica – Yarwun

Orica – Yarwun is one of the world’s largest producers of mining chemicals and also produces chlorine for use in the treatment of drinking water. The site was built in the 1990s and has since undergone several expansions. Orica – Yarwun employs about 200 people.

Gladstone Public Hospital

Our public hospital employs about 470 people and services the general health needs for our region.  The Gladstone Hospital dates back to 1887 when the community of 400 raised the necessary funding to build a hospital. It opened in 1890 with four wards. In 1925 the original wooden building was demolished and replaced with a concrete structure. It has since been expanded and upgraded several times. Mater Hospital Gladstone

The Mater Hospital Gladstone provides a wide range of private medical and hospital services to the Gladstone region. Mercy Health and Aged Care Central Queensland, a not-for-profit catholic organisation who deliver health and aged care, operate the Mater. The Mater is collocated with the Gladstone Public Hospital and was opened in 1999.
